The Best Green Diapers

7/20/2009
by Mae Jones

I think diapers have become a symbol of the rift between green culture and consumer culture because they epitomize waste for convenience sake.  Lucky for us, we no longer need to use square pieces of cloth and pins to keep baby and planet clean.  Today’s eco-friendly options are more effective than old-fashioned prefolds, and all three brands were as effective regular disposables. I encourage everyone to try one of these systems, and if one (or two) work for you, tell your friends and families.

THE CHEAPEST: Kushies Ultra.  You’ll probably have two to three hundred dollars in diapers, plus another 400 in water, detergent, and energy during your child’s diaper years. However, you’ll need a pack of disposables a month for nighttime and travel, which means in two years, you’ll likely spend 300 at the store.  Still, that grand total of about a grand is at least a grand less than every other option.

THE GREENEST: GDiapers.  Nothing to sit in a landfill and very little to wash.  What you throw away really goes away. GDiapers are Cradle-to-Cradle Gold certified so you can be sure you’re doing your part.

THE EASIEST: Nature Babycare.  If you’re already using disposables, NBs won’t change your habits one bit, but they will reduce landfill space, as well as the diaper industry’s reliance on oil.

THE BEST: GDiapers or Kushies Ultra combined with Nature Babycare.   If you want to commit to one system and you’re willing to spend the most money, then invest in four or five pair of little g pants and a hefty supply of pads.  GDiapers will cost you about ten percent more than traditional diapers in the two years most babies need them, but you’ll have a clear conscience.  An equally good alternative (the one we chose, in fact) is to buy and use a few sets of Kushies Ultra when at home, and depend on Nature Babycare when you need a disposable.
